Poetry enthusiasts flocked to
the Filipinas Heritage Library in Makati last March 16 to participate in
"Love OUt Loud 2," a poetry reading contest sponsored by the University
of the Philippines Creative Writing Center and the Filipinas Heritage Library.
The unusual literary event is held yearly as a celebration of love poems
by aspiring poets, and as a fund-raising activity for the UPCWC's projects.
Over 60 participants gamely read their original poems in English and Filipino before an audience of literary lovers, friends, and a panel of judges comprised of distinguished writers from UP, Ateneo, La Salle, and UST. The contest lasted for 3 hours and was divided into 3 parts. Winners were chosen by the panel of judges at the end of each hour. This year's judges were Rebecca Anonuevo, Hermie Beltran, Marjorie Evasco, Susan Lara, Danny Reyes, Joy Barrios, Ralph Galan, Ramil Gulle, Luna Sicat, Chuck Syjuco, Roland Tolentino, Gemina Abad, Ronald Baytan, Mike Coroza, and Jose Dalisay Jr. According to Mabi David - this year's affair was different from the 2 previous years in that participants were not limited to the Makati yuppies or students from Metro Manila schools, but came from as far as Cavite and Marikina. Noel Moratilla and JPV Carpio emerged as first and second prize winners in the first hour. For the second hour, Vita Brevis, Chati Coronel, and Anna Baluyot, won first, second, and third prizes respectively. Angelo Suarez and Eman Pascual, won first and second prizes in the third hour. With Third Domingo and Beverly Siy sharing the third prize. Edber Mamisao, who performed in the second hour, was given honorable mention for his performance. The winners are entitled to attend
for free the Writing Workshop of their choice, from among workshops held
at the Ayala Museum and the Balay Kalinaw at UP Diliman. These workshops
are facilitated by prominent, much-awarded writers associated with the
UP Creative Writing Center.
